The Lion of Nimrud: destroyed in Mosul, rising again

Out of destruction and pain, hope is reborn.

In 2015 the dark hands of destruction targeted the iconic “Lion of Nimrud” inside the Mosul Cultural Museum. This magnificent Assyrian masterpiece, which had stood proud since the reign of King Ashurnasirpal II, was shattered into hundreds of pieces.

Today, through dedicated and careful restoration work by national and international teams, this timeless icon is being pieced back together, fragment by fragment. The Lion of Nimrud is not merely stone; it is a testament to the greatness of Mesopotamian civilization and the resilience of Mosul.

The emblem they tried to erase stands strong once again.
