Karbala كربلاء
The city of the shrines of Imam Husayn and al-Abbas.
Karbala is one of the holiest cities in Shia Islam. Imam Husayn was killed here in 680 AD, and his shrine and that of his half-brother al-Abbas face each other across a wide promenade. Each year millions walk to Karbala for the Arbaeen pilgrimage.
Karbala is where Imam Husayn, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, was killed in battle in 680 AD. His shrine and that of his half-brother al-Abbas face each other across Bayn al-Haramayn, the wide promenade between the two holy places, and together they make Karbala one of the most visited cities in the world.
Every year the Arbaeen walk brings millions of pilgrims to Karbala on foot, many of them from Najaf, in one of the largest gatherings of people anywhere. Along the route families offer free food, tea and places to rest, a tradition of hospitality that visitors never forget. Outside the main pilgrimage dates the city is calmer, and the mirrored halls and tiled courtyards of the shrines can be seen at a gentler pace.
