Iraq travel essentials

Visas, money, SIM cards, the best time to visit, getting around and local etiquette: what to know before you travel to Iraq.

🛂 Visas & entry

Many nationalities can get an Iraqi visa online (e-visa) or on arrival at major airports. The Kurdistan Region may follow its own entry rules. Requirements and fees change often, so check before you travel. Iraq Places can help you with the visa process: send us your nationality and travel dates on WhatsApp.

🛡️ Safety

Conditions vary by region and can change. Check your government’s current travel advice, travel with a licensed local operator, and keep your passport with you because checkpoints are common on intercity roads. Our guides plan routes, permissions and timing for every tour.

💵 Money

The currency is the Iraqi dinar (IQD). Iraq is largely a cash economy. Bring clean, recent US dollar notes to exchange, and do not rely on cards outside larger hotels. Exchange offices in cities give better rates than airports.

📱 SIM cards & internet

The main mobile networks are Zain, Asiacell and Korek. You can buy a local SIM with your passport at official shops, and mobile data is affordable. Wi-Fi is common in hotels and cafés.

☀️ Best time to visit

October to April is the most comfortable time for most of Iraq. Summers from June to September are extremely hot in the centre and south, often above 45°C. Kurdistan is pleasant in spring and autumn and cooler in summer.

🚐 Getting around

Baghdad, Erbil, Basra, Najaf and Sulaymaniyah have international airports. Between cities, a private car with a driver is the most practical option and is included in our tours. Shared taxis and buses exist but are hard to use without Arabic.

🧕 Dress & etiquette

Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered. Women need an abaya and headscarf at major shrines, which are often lent at the entrance. Remove your shoes where asked, use your right hand for greetings and food, and accept tea: hospitality is central to Iraqi life.

📷 Photography

Ask before photographing people, especially women. Do not photograph checkpoints, military sites or security personnel. Drone use needs official permission.
