Ishtar Gate (replica) بوابة عشتار

A replica of the blue glazed-brick gate of Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylon, decorated with bulls and dragons.

A reconstruction of the blue glazed-brick gate decorated with bulls and dragons that marked the entrance to Babylon. The original glazed bricks were excavated in the early 20th century and are displayed in Berlin.

The original Ishtar Gate was built around 575 BC by Nebuchadnezzar II and dedicated to the goddess Ishtar. Its walls were covered with blue glazed bricks and rows of bulls and dragons, the symbols of the gods Adad and Marduk, and it opened onto the Processional Way used in the New Year festival.

German archaeologists excavated the gate in the early 20th century, and its glazed bricks were reassembled in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin. The replica at the site marks the entrance to ancient Babylon and is one of the most photographed places in Iraq.
