Al-Kadhimiya Shrine مرقد الكاظمية
The golden-domed shrine of Imam Musa al-Kadhim and Imam Muhammad al-Jawad in north Baghdad.
The golden-domed shrine of two Shia imams, Musa al-Kadhim and Muhammad al-Jawad, in the north of Baghdad. Modest dress is required.
The shrine is the burial place of Musa al-Kadhim, the seventh Shia imam, and his grandson Muhammad al-Jawad, the ninth. The district of Kadhimiya grew around it on the west bank of the Tigris, and the shrine’s two golden domes and four minarets are landmarks of the city.
The present buildings were rebuilt and decorated over many centuries, with tilework, mirror work and calligraphy. The streets around the shrine are full of markets selling prayer beads, sweets and textiles, especially lively in the evening.
