Rabban Hormizd Monastery دير الربان هرمزد
A 7th-century monastery cut into the mountainside above Alqosh.
A monastery cut into the mountainside above the town of Alqosh, founded in the 7th century.
The monastery was founded in the 7th century by the monk Rabban Hormizd, and for centuries it was the seat of the patriarchs of the Church of the East, several of whom are buried here. Its chapels and cells are cut into the rock of the mountain, high above the Nineveh Plains.
A steep path and steps lead up from Alqosh, an old Assyrian Christian town known for the tomb of the Prophet Nahum. The views from the monastery over the plains are spectacular. It is usually combined with Lalish and Khinnis.
