Abu Dulaf Mosque جامع أبو دلف

A great 9th-century Abbasid mosque north of Samarra with its own spiral minaret.

A second great Abbasid mosque north of Samarra, with its own smaller spiral minaret.

The Abu Dulaf Mosque was built in the 860s by caliph al-Mutawakkil for his new city of al-Ja‘fariyya, north of Samarra. Like the Great Mosque, it has massive brick walls and a spiral minaret standing outside the prayer hall, smaller than the Malwiya but built on the same plan.

Its rows of brick piers and arches, partly restored, give a good idea of what the great Abbasid mosques looked like inside. It is part of the Samarra Archaeological City listed by UNESCO in 2007, and is usually visited together with the Malwiya.
