Shaqlawa lies at the foot of the Safeen mountain, about 50 km north-east of Erbil. Its orchards, vineyards and springs have made it a summer resort for generations, and the town is known for its fruit, honey, raisins and walnuts.
The town has a long Christian and Kurdish heritage, with old churches and markets. It is a good stop on the road towards the valleys and mountains of the north.
