Imam Husayn Shrine مرقد الإمام الحسين

The shrine of Imam Husayn, grandson of the Prophet, at the heart of Karbala.

The focus of Karbala, with richly decorated courtyards and mirror work. Women wear an abaya and headscarf inside.

Imam Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, was killed at the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. His shrine, built over his grave, is one of the holiest places in Shia Islam and the focus of the Ashura and Arbaeen commemorations, when millions of pilgrims gather in the city.

Its golden dome and minarets face the shrine of his half-brother al-Abbas across the Bayn al-Haramayn promenade. Inside, the halls glitter with mirror mosaics, carved wood and silver, and the courtyards are busy day and night.
