Imam Ali Shrine مرقد الإمام علي

The golden-domed shrine of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib at the heart of Najaf.

The golden dome and courtyards at the heart of the old city of Najaf, one of the most visited holy places in the world.

The shrine holds the tomb of Ali ibn Abi Talib, the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, the fourth caliph and the first Shia imam, who died in 661. Over the centuries it has been rebuilt and decorated by many rulers, and its golden dome and minarets dominate the old city.

Inside, courtyards lined with tilework lead to halls of mirror mosaic and calligraphy. The shrine is open day and night and receives millions of pilgrims every year, and the streets around it are full of markets and the seminaries for which Najaf is famous.
