One of the earliest mosques in Islam, where Imam Ali led prayers and was struck in 661.

One of the earliest mosques in Islam, in the city of Kufa just outside Najaf.

Kufa was founded in the 7th century and became the capital of Ali ibn Abi Talib during his caliphate. Its great mosque, one of the oldest in the world, is where Ali was struck while praying in 661. The mosque has been rebuilt many times and today has a vast courtyard, golden domes and the shrines of Muslim ibn Aqil and other early figures of Islam.

Kufa lies on the Euphrates about 10 km from Najaf, and the two are usually visited together.
