Wadi al-Salam Cemetery مقبرة وادي السلام
One of the largest cemeteries in the world, stretching for kilometres north of the old city of Najaf.
Wadi al-Salam, the “Valley of Peace”, covers about six square kilometres and holds millions of graves. Many Shia Muslims wish to be buried close to Imam Ali, and for centuries families have brought their dead here from across Iraq and beyond.
The cemetery’s domed tombs, brick mausoleums and narrow lanes form a city of its own. It also contains shrines associated with the prophets Hud and Salih. Visit with a guide and dress respectfully.
